This putting drill seems like it covers golf putting basics, but if you really want to learn how to putt and improve your putting stroke, this is one of the best golf putting lessons for you to learn.

When it comes to simple golf putting tips, it does not get much easier to improve your putting stroke than this drill. Using just your trail hand to improve your putting technique, use a little forward shaft lean and get the proper ball position to help you make more solid contact with your putter.

Most amateur golfers have too much loft at impact, and have their putter ball position too far forward, resulting in hopping shots that skip and roll poorly. Instead, this putting drill helps you load the putter properly, while maintaining the proper putter loft through impact.

  1. i am not exactly certain about what you mean by "load."… do you mean bending your wrist every so sligtly and keeping it through the strking of the ball? Sorry if this is a clueless qeustion. Lost in translation, perhaps?

  2. Here’s my question, I throw a football and baseball right handed, write left handed, shoot basketball left handed, kick left with my left foot, right eye dominate. Drink wine with my right and beer with my left as well as using a knife. Do I do this drill with left or right hand?

  3. Good drill – which hand should you use for one handed drill if you putt cross handed left hand low?

  4. I have played this whole season one handed and have been making more putts than last yr, the only thing i get comments from my other league players

  5. Great tips…love the drill which stops me from flipping…my ball doesn’t skid but rolls true and putts are rarely short anymore.
    Thank you!!!

  6. I changed my putting grip to the claw grip and I have better control of my putter. Do you ever tried it?

  7. What is your reasoning or the scientific rationale for de-lofting the putter face at contact? What does it physically accomplish? Thanks!

  8. I totally agree with all you said but you should have added that your right hand must finish the throw , ie it must be accelerating toward the target. You actually demonstrated the effet of not doing that when you missed your attempts with the right hand , the follow through was not quite there . This is my theory and I know it works . I would love to hear your thoughts on this .

  9. Based on the reviews you are on a winner but being right handed playing as a left hander I don;t seem to have the strength to putt with my left hand. any ideas that may help plse

  10. This is the best putting tip. I am practicing it regularly and it has started saving me 3/4 shots either by holing out or getting close on look putts. Thank you very much Todd

  11. I’ve been putting one handed for around 20 years now ! Just find a nice light putter so you feel how hard to hit the distance necessary and don’t forget the advantage you get by omitting half of the argument you’re brain gives you is worth even less strokes !!!! πŸ‘ŒπŸ‘πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

  12. Great video. (Again) Would you share with me the name of your putter grip and size? Thanks. I want to change my current grip.

  13. This would be great, but I am a tennis player and I yip with my right hand, I have to claw with my right hand! Can’t control it

  14. Thanks for all your help Todd! I get the forward press β€œloading”. But how do you ensure slight upward motion? Does that happen naturally given ball position? Thanks!

  15. Excellent video on Putting Todd! I have tried the right hand only putting drill on the practice green and it does work. Also, I do load the right wrist on the backswing and hold it through the stroke. It appears that one thing that I have to change is where the butt end of the putter is pointing at address. I have it pointing at my belly button. My ball position is the same as you recommend; however, I will definitely look into the slight shaft lean forward. Good Job Todd!

  16. Thank you so much for the forward press putting technique! πŸ™πŸ‘Œ
Great length control and so much better roll with this tipp!

  17. Hey Todd, I enjoy all your instruction but this one may be a real game changer for me. I have suffered for years due to a yip in my right hand and have tried every conceivable way to stroke putts. Trying to keep my hands quiet just kills me! The motion in the stroke you outlined is having great initial impact….thx so much!

  18. my dominant hand is my lead hand. should I hit putts with me lead hand since that is my dominant hand?

  19. I, too, am a right handed golfer who put left hand low, and I agree with you about contacting ball on an upward stroke ether that slight forward lean of the golf shaft. Great putting drill even for the left hand low putters.

I perhaps you could do some drills for us inasmuch as there is a growing population of us LHL putterers [sic].
    Great lesson this early morning.

  20. Love this. I’ve been nicknamed Slot machine bc I’m a one handed putter just like this.

I was a terrible putter, always 3 putting. Practiced so much one handed that I couldn’t putt anyother way.

I learned the forward shaft lean for pure consistent rolls while practicing. It’s a game changer for me. But i have less backswing and far more follow thru.

Went from shooting in the 90s to 80s.

  21. Don’t recommend this wonderful channel to your golf friends, then you could crush them on the green.πŸ˜„

  22. This is why I have always wonder why putters have positive loft. If you hit the ball with a straight shaft the ball starts to bounce. Thats why I always bought putters with less loft… What’s your feelings about that? I have used this drill from time to time to keep this feel…

  23. As always Todd the best golf videos and instructions on the Tube you rock buddy , putter face facing downward and swinging slightly upward , one hand load and hold

  24. My question is I am left-handed but pod right handed should I do right hand dominant in my regular putting stroke

  25. What does he mean by "load and hold"? I noticed that his backswing was about 2/3 and the follow through was about 1/3. This is the reverse of what I had heard you were supposed to do.

  26. I agree with most of this video however a lot of the reason that amateurs add loft to the putter is because the greens we put on are let’s just say a little bit furry? You have to get that ball rolling on top of the grass just my opinion

  27. I have watched a custom putter fitting video that indicated the up and deloft contact…. I need to practice that… Thanks…

  28. I have a concern in regard to dominant hand drill. I am left handed but due to being left eye dominant I play right handed. Should I try a different drill?

  29. I throw a ball left handed, write left handed, play guitar left handed as it’s my strongest arm, but I play all racquet sports including cricket and golf right handed so basics I’m screwed😊. Seriously I went out today and used my right hand only and was shocked at how accurate weight wise the putts were. My strong hand is getting in the way! Keeping the Club face straight was a wee challenge one handed. Any tips on what to do with the strongest left hand?

  30. Interesting video Todd!! I play golf right handed but, unfortunately, my dominant hand is my left (I write left handed, play racquet sports left handed, etc) so do I do this drill with my left hand?

  31. I don’t often disagree with your instruction, but this is that exception. I guarantee that if you "load and then HOLD" on the through-stroke, you’ll push putts to the right when you’re under pressure. At least, that’s my experience when I’ve tried to use this technique. I think you have to let the face arc naturally back AND through. What are your thoughts on that issue?

  32. I write right-handed but throw and catch left-handed… but I do play golf right-handed. For 20+ years have always used a right-hand only putting drill to get the best feel for the greens (before the round), especially at a new course.

  33. I love it that I stumbled on this video today Todd. I know this is not what you are advocating, but last week (with my wife as my witness) I decided to put 1 handed for an entire round…no exceptions. I 1-2 putted 15 greens and shot my lowest round ever. I dropped multiple 8-10 footers and that is not my norm. Now the greens were fairly flat and I know the course, but I’ve always wondered why we use large muscles for what is a small muscle activity. I’ve thrown probably 1000s of darts at 1/2 inch targets and hit ping pong balls and tennis balls to an edge line at full speed… why would I add my other shoulder & arm & hand to tap a ball 20 feet?. It made no sense at all. I’m convinced that people won’t try it and practice it due to peer pressure….period. If any top pro started doing it, stick with it and started winning, it would be the next big thing. I’ve not had a chance to play since and I’ll see how my resoluteness stands at the club vs the muni, but at the moment I’m hooked! I had not thought of your club path and face points but it matches the feel you have when you putt perfectly. Thanks for the vid!
